Be Clear About Who You Are
Either hold a rock concert, or a ballet; but don’t hold a rock concert and advertise it as a ballet. —Warren Buffett
In other words, be clear about what you are as a company and people can self-select from there.
When starting out, you need to think through and make decisions based on where you want your company to go. It’s very difficult to switch midstream. So if your company is a rock concert, it will be very difficult to transition to a ballet and take much time and clear communication with your investors, board, shareholders, and most importantly customers. It’s near impossible.
You have to be super clear about what kind of company you’re trying to build and how you’re going to do it.
It’s not too much to ask. Market what you’re actually selling. And it’s okay if you’re a rock concert, just be clear about what your company is and what it isn’t.
P.S. Merry Christmas to all of you!
