Hello Netflix! If you’re one of the 4 million new subscribers to the online video subscription service, then you should watch a documentary called ‘Desert Runners.’ It follows 4 amateur ultra marathon runners as they attempt to traverse 4 runs across the world’s largest deserts. Each run is over 250kms.
To survive the brutal length of this race, hustling up one mountain doesn’t get you very far. It takes something more.
“Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina…Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
In Angela Duckworth’s short TED talk, she mentions that true success in people is not if they have a high IQ or can solve problems quickly. Rather, it’s that never giving up, perseverance that grit displays.
And if there’s one thing long distance runners have in common, it’s grit. “A very common trait, especially in ultra-marathoners, is stubbornness. When this group of people starts something, they will finish it no matter what." [HT to this interesting article on ultra marathon runners]
An idea is a dime a dozen. Execution of that idea is everything.
And to execute an idea into something that becomes a successful and sustainable business takes true grit.
